AI storyboards for short video: stop generating frames one at a time

Generating short-form video frame by frame is slow, and the results drift — characters and scenes stop matching from shot to shot. This walkthrough shows the storyboard-first approach I use instead: plan the shots up front, then let AI generate a consistent, connected sequence you can cut straight into a short.

Why frame-by-frame breaks down

When you prompt each image separately, the character’s face, proportions, hairstyle, and outfit drift between shots, and the scene loses continuity. The fix is to lock the character first, then plan every shot in one pass — so consistency is built in rather than fought for after the fact.

The storyboard-first workflow

• Step 1 — Build a character reference sheet. Generate the same character from multiple angles (full-body front and back, front portrait, side profile) on a plain neutral background, keeping face, proportions, hairstyle, outfit, and accessories identical across every view. This sheet becomes the consistency anchor for everything that follows.
• Step 2 — Generate the whole storyboard in one prompt. Feed the character reference and a short story idea into a single storyboard prompt. It expands a brief idea into a full arc — setup, inciting event, rising action, climax, ending — laid out as a professional multi-panel sheet (by default 15 panels for a 15-second story, in cinematic 9:16 framing) with camera angles, expressions, and environment noted per panel, and the same character and art style held across all of them.
